University of Akron Athletic Field House and Varsity Golf Training Center

Former Athletic Director
"The Zips’ indoor golf facility is among the best in the nation and includes a putting green, bunker, video player development simulator and study lounge for the student-athletes."
Former Director of Athletics
While we were originally selected to lead the space programming and operational planning for the 135,000 square foot Recreation and Wellness Center, our experience with the planning and design of varsity athletics facilities became extremely valuable when the University Trustees decided to double the scope of the project. SportsPLAN Studio conducted a series of workshops with the coaches and athletic staff, prepared a program of space requirements and led the planning for all of the varsity athletic facilities.
We developed fourteen different configurations and cost comparisons for the indoor track and football practice field. We designed the spectator grandstand, varsity football locker room, sports medicine center, athletic equipment center, strength and conditioning center and a 5,000 square foot indoor varsity golf training center.
