Virginia Tech - Indoor Athletic Training Facility

Virginia Tech - Indoor Athletic Training Facility
This is the way to create an indoor practice facility. We have worked on many similar structures, but when the IATF is finished, Virginia Tech will have established a new benchmark for this building type.
"You've done an outstanding job for us. Thanks especially for your professionalism. We look forward to the completed project with much enthusiasm, and we will be calling you again to help with our next design/build project."
-Tom Gabbard,
Associate Athletic Director, Virginia Tech

Four years after we completed work on the addition of football team facilities and a wrestling training center to Jamerson Athletic Complex, Virginia Tech selected SportsPLAN Studio again to serve as design/build criteria consultant for the Indoor Athletic Training Facility.

We have tackled an accelerated schedule, limited construction space, complex operational planning and the goal of LEED-Silver Certification. The field house is uniquely large, featuring an 85-foot interior clear height with elevated coaching platforms and the infrastructure for as many as ten remote-controlled coaches’ video cameras wired to the video coordinator’s studio.

Uninterrupted use of the adjacent practice fields, service drive and stadium walkways require that the building be constructed entirely from within its own footprint, so our criteria documents required inventive solutions. Programming, site analysis, surveys, soil borings, and conceptual designs, including three-dimensional studies of volume and massing were completed in less than three months. We then prepared a design/build criteria package and assisted Virginia Tech in selecting W.M. Jordan and HKS as the design-build team. Our assignment also included construction-phase oversight and monthly visits to monitor the progress.
